Playing with Bunka

Bunka thread is a fine rayon cord used originally for Japanese punch needle embroidery.

It is much the same as the cord used for tassels and fringes. Bunka is much thicker than embroidery thread and is woven rather than in individual strands of ‘silk’. Because the cord is woven it is easy to unravel. One just need poke at the end of the Bunka with a pin or tweezers, get hold of a loose thread and pull. Bingo! In seconds the cord has become unraveled. It is so easy that it is hard to stop pulling.

Unravelled Bunka becomes a very interesting tiny spiral of rayon thread. It can be used in this form to make hair for tiny dolls, as it resembles tight ringlets. It also works well as a decoration on dollhouse size gift boxes and bags. You can see in the photograph how much it looks like the curly ribbons that often decorate real size gifts.

It is very simple to make a fluffy bow or streamers hanging from a silk bow. Just unravel a 10 or 15 inches of Bunka, wind it around a couple of your fingers. Use a twist of fine wire to fasten, then just cut the ‘’miniature curly ribbon’’ trim to the length you want.

The pink ‘’bow’’ on the pink box is made from Bunka, as well the green ribbon hanging from the poinsettias on the Christmas bag, and orange ribbon attached to the bow on the birthday bag.
